Cloud printing on the go: "Cross posted on the the Gmail Blog and the Google Mobile Blog

Back in April 2010 we announced Google Cloud Print, a service in beta that allows printing from any app on any device, OS or browser without the need to install any software. Just last month we opened Google Cloud Print to users in the Chrome notebook pilot program. Today we are very pleased to announce the beta launch of Google Cloud Print for mobile documents and Gmail for mobile, which we will be rolling out to users throughout the next few days.

Imagine printing an important document from your smartphone on the way to work and finding the printout waiting for you when you walk in the door. Just open a document in Google Docs or an email in Gmail in your mobile browser and choose “Print” from the dropdown menu in the top right corner. You can also print certain kinds of email attachments (such as .pdf or .doc) by clicking the “Print” link that appears next to them.

This feature will be rolling out today and tomorrow for English speaking users in the US and will work on most phones that support HTML5, such as devices running Android 2.1+ and iOS 3+. To get started, you’ll need to connect your printer to Google Cloud Print. This step requires a Windows PC for now, but Linux and Mac support are coming soon. USDOE Releases National Education Technology Plan

The United State Department of Education has posted their draft National Education Technology Plan (NETP), which was released March 5, 2010. It provides the context and vision for how information and communication technologies can help transform American education. The plan provides a set of concrete goals to inform state and local educational technology plans, as well as recommendations to inspire research, development, and innovation.

The United States Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, on the plan:

We have the opportunity to completely reform our nation’s schools. We’re not talking about tinkering around the edges here. We’re talking about a fundamental re-thinking of how our schools function—and placing a focus on teaching and learning like never before.

Discovery Education Workshop in Times Square

Discovery Channel has an exhibit in Times Square, and we have scheduled several Discovery Education workshops in the exhibit space over the next several months. The three-hour free workshops will focus on the integration of media into classroom instruction. Any NYC educator/administrator is welcome to attend!

Come and learn new ways to use and embed Discovery Education streaming media into your curriculum and then go explore media in a whole new way by visiting the Titanic, Da Vinci, and, coming soon, the King Tut exhibit!

Each session will be offered in the Discovery Education classroom from 9am-12pm and then repeat 3-6pm.

Since space is very limited (30 people), we are offering a series of training dates for you to choose. As you are registering for the sessions please choose the date and time that you wish to attend.

Spots are assigned on a first-come, first serve basis. Each classroom can hold thirty people. Any registration received after thirty will be notified and given a choice of other dates/spots.

At this not-for-profit Web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or experiences their students need in order to learn. These ideas become classroom reality when concerned individuals—Citizen Philanthropists—choose projects to fund. Proposals range from Magical Math Centers ($200) to Big Book Bonanza ($320), to Cooking Across the Curriculum ($1,100). From January through May of 2009, donors funded $6,704,265 worth of resources for students in need. This generosity has encouraged 97,151 teachers in 28,055 public schools to submit 218,907 project proposals for their students. Most of these students come from low-income communities. Follow Presidential Footsteps People to People Ambassador Programs has announced Presidential Leadership: In the Footsteps of Presidents Obama and Lincoln, a new summer travel program that provides students the opportunity to learn important leadership skills by following the political footsteps of Presidents Obama and Lincoln. College students from the City University of New York (CUNY) are available to assist your school with its technology needs. The Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT) and CUNY are working together to deliver high-quality interns, willing and able to provide support in the following areas:

Setting up new computer equipment in classrooms and offices
Installing software
Ensuring that LCD projectors, smart boards, and other related audio/video equipment are functioning
Troubleshooting hardware and software problems in conjunction with DOE Help Center and borough technology staff
Configuring wireless devices to access DOE network
Maintaining classroom servers
Maintaining technology equipment inventory
Monitoring equipment and working with Help Center to ensure timely repair
Providing assistance in use of technology equipment
Coordinating with MOUSE Squad, if applicable

These interns are working toward degrees in computer-related fields and are screened by both a program manager at CUNY and a borough technology manager at DIIT. Interns receive 12 hours of classroom and field training from DIIT on a range of topics, including network troubleshooting, wireless configuration, HSST, instructional software, and network printing.

You can hire an intern for either 14 or 19 hours a week. Participating schools will receive on-site technology support for 39 weeks of the year, from August 31 through June 30 (excluding school breaks). Hiring an intern for 14 hours a week costs $9,600 (FAMIS # DIIT00001). Hiring an intern for 19 hours a week costs $12,500 (FAMIS # DIIT00002).

First up, the Google Earth and SketchUp teams are excited to announce the first-ever Google K-12 curriculum competition for educators in the US! Launched November 12th in conjunction with the new Ancient Rome 3D layer in Google Earth, the competition brings together a thrilling new feature in Google Earth with your imagination and teaching expertise! A joint effort between Google, the Rome Reborn Project, and Past Perfect Productions, the new Ancient Rome 3D Layer in Google Earth allows users to view and explore over 6700 3D buildings as scholars determine they stood in 320 AD. If you ever dreamed of walking along the same streets as Constantine or gazing up at the Coliseum as it stood in ancient times, you'll be amazed at what you can experience behind your keyboard! The fun really begins on December 24th when at 3am PST, Santa lifts off into the northern sky to begin his trek around the globe. 1. MDGs-ONLY WITH YOUR VOICE TEAM ANNOUNCES ACTION PROJECT GUIDE, PHASE II. This is an 8-month guide for teachers, which they will be implementing with their students. Speak Up about 21st Century Education!

With a new President and a new Congress in Washington and many new Governors around the country, this is a critically important time for you, your students, and their parents to have a voice in the new education policies, programs, and funding.

I would like to personally invite your school or district to be part of the Speak Up online research project and have your voices heard on the future of American education.

Each fall Project Tomorrow, the nation's leading nonprofit group supporting student voices in education, facilitates the national Speak Up project to collect and report on the authentic, unfiltered viewpoints of K-12 students, teachers, parents, and administrators. We present the national data findings to Congress and the US Department of Education each Spring, and all participating schools and districts get access to their own data for planning and budgeting purposes.

Since fall 2003, over 1.2 million students, teachers, parents, and administrators have participated in the annual Speak Up surveys and the data findings regularly impact federal, state, and local policies, programs, and funding for education. We hope that you will join this national project and provide input in shaping a new direction for American education in the 21st century.

How to Get Started with Speak Up

The Speak Up website offers convenient tools for helping make Speak Up a big success in your school or district. You can find Quick Tips for Educators, flyers for posting at your school, sample emails for communicating with other educators and parents, lesson plans, previews of the survey and more.

Here are a couple of steps to get started:

Add the Speak Up Logo to your website and link to the Speak Up Survey.
Post Speak Up as an event on your school portal, parent loop or learning management system.
Distribute the Speak Up Flyer at your school.
Share information about Speak Up with your principals, district administrators, and school board members.
Send regular emails to your teachers, administrators and parents about participating in Speak Up.
Have a competition within your district for the greatest number of surveys submitted -- we will update you weekly on your participation numbers.
Start planning now for how you are going to use your Speak Up data in February: to write a grant, to revise your technology plan, to inform new expenditures, as input for teacher training programs, etc.

Here is the scoop for what's happening on the Election Day Professional Development Day.

All districts are invited to IS 228 K,

We will be running two sessions (and the Renzulli session that some of you are involved in will be running concurrently and is required for those participating in that program)

The sessions are:

GOOGLE DOCS INSTITUTE -- Learn to use this powerful online collaborative took to create projects in your classroom that take learning beyond the four walls of your classroom at the same time as it empowers students to truly collaborate on classroom projects and homework. Participants will learn how to use Google Docs, how to design learning activities around the tool, and how to manage this virtual classroom.

DESIGNING A CLASSROOM PROJECT WITH SOCIAL MEDIA -- Learn how today's YouTube generation is making their mark on the digital world and how you can leverage social media to create an authentic audience for your student's projects. Participants will learn how to use ubiquitous media capture devices with Windows Movie Maker and iMovie to create digital media as instructional learning modules.

For some of you this may be a revisit to using these powerful tools but our experience and strategies for implementation have developed so much we think you'll find the sessions useful.

What's new?

For the Google Docs, we will show you better examples of integration, new ways to create student accounts (and overcome the email issue -- bring your roster), and engaging hands on group activities to really drive home the point.

For the Digital Media, we will introduce the impact social media is having on education and how to use just about any video capture device to make this a reality in your classroom.

NSBA Announces “20 to Watch” as Leaders in Education Technology
Alexandria, VA - Sept. 29, 2008 - The National School Boards Association’s Technology Leadership Network (TLN) has announced its annual list identifying 20 emerging leaders in education technology. These individuals are recognized for championing technology initiatives that make a difference for students, teachers, school districts, and the greater education technology community.
A nationwide search was conducted to identify individuals who reflect the spirit of creativity and collaboration that embraces the power of technology to enhance learning for students, inspire colleagues, transform operations, and engage communities.
“Innovation in K-12 technology is the result of educators with the vision, passion, and natural curiosity to explore new tools and teaching strategies that transforms teaching and learning,” said Ann Flynn, director of education technology for NSBA. “Today, the exceptional accomplishments of these 20 individuals help us define our expectations for the role technology can play in the future. The "Green Light Contest" essay competition, sponsored by PC Mall Gov, in partnership with HP, InFocus and T.H.E. Journal, is seeking entries from students in two categories: grades 5 - 8 and 9 - 12. In essays of 1,000 words or less students are asked to describe how they and their teachers can utilize technology to protect the environment, with the grand-prize-winning composition being awarded a 30-seat "green" computer lab for the author's school. The purpose of this survey is to gather information about the New York City Department of Education's Internet Safety Curriculum. Reel Works Teen Filmmaking, a nonprofit arts organization that serves over 150 teens each year, is producing an Internet Safety DVD for the Department of Education. The DVD will contain four short films about the following subjects: Online Gaming Safety, Sexual Predators, Cyber-Bullying, and Protecting Identity. This scholarship will allow one team of up to 12 members to compete in the first annual ROBOFEST NYC, a new robotics event that will be held at SONY Wonder Technology Labs on April 12th.

ROBOFEST NYC was designed as an opportunity to celebrate creative work by children in the field of robotics. The event will feature both a student expo of original projects and a robotics performers competition. Teams and exhibitors may work with any robotics system including RCX, NXT, and Pico Cricket, and medals will be awarded for ingenuity, design, and programming.

Share the iLead Institute with your principal

The Office of Instructional Technology (OIT) is offering New York City principals an additional opportunity to participate in a year-long iLead Instructional Technology Leadership Institute, beginning this spring with a 4-day prerequisite session. The goals of the institute are to prepare principals to meet the technological challenges of leading a 21st-century school, to guide instructional leaders in promoting the effective integration of technology into their classrooms, and to provide principals with the technology skills to view, manipulate and analyze data to inform instructional decisions.

This spring, the institute will guide leaders through four days of instruction focused on relevant research and alignment to the National Education Technology Standards for Administrators. During the course of the institute, participants will have the opportunity to visit a model school that demonstrates effective use of technology. Participants will also work with an on-site consultant to extend and expand the use of technology for instruction and school management. Participants will have access to online communication and collaboration tools created for this program.

OIT will fund selected applicants to participate in this year-long program. The application deadline is February 7 at 5 p.m. Please note that the program is a year-long commitment. Rollout of Improved Internet Filtering Software

In response to feedback from principals and teachers regarding the limitations of the existing instructional web filter, we are rolling out a new internet filtering software package in the coming weeks. This new system will ensure that fewer instructional websites are blocked, will state more clearly why certain pages are blocked, and will help web pages load more quickly.

Although you will not experience any interruption in your internet access as we roll out this new software, customizations you made to the old filter will not carry over. The new filter allows you to block categories of websites rather than individual ones. To customize the new filter to block or unblock certain categories of sites, you can fill out the form available at www.nycboe.net/adminorg/divisions/diit/sws/.

The implementation schedule is as follows:

Week of January 22 – Districts 13-23, 32
Week of January 28 – Districts 24-31
Week of February 4 – Districts 1-12
